Overview

Our unique state school teaching programme gives you the chance to gain an authentic insight into Chinese society and an education system like no other, whilst acquiring highly sought-after skills and experience. Whether or not you wish to pursue a teaching career, this programme will give you transferable skills and valuable life experience useful to any career path.

As an English language teacher, you will be responsible for planning and leading fun and engaging lessons that focus on practicing spoken English with large classes of Chinese students from kindergarten to university. Depending on the age and ability of your students, you will have a Mandarin-speaking assistant to support you in the classroom. Your school will provide you with text books and guidance, but our teachers are encouraged to use their imagination and creativity to make their classes special.

Our state school placement not only gives you the chance to play a role in state school pupils’ English education, but also to benefit from weekends, a long winter/summer break and fewer working hours than in private schools.

With free accommodation, a 6-8 week long national holiday and salary that allows you to save more than you spend (£550-£1575 per month ($760-$2125), depending on location), you could find yourself following in the footsteps of our past teachers and exploring exciting parts of China, or venturing further afield to places such as Vietnam, Cambodia or India!

Our state school programme has been running since 2005, meaning we have built strong relationships with schools all over China, which enable us to offer a wide variety of placement options.

Each year, we have placements available in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan, Suzhou, Yangzhou, Jinan, Jiujiang.

“Living and teaching in China was probably the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had. It gave me a unique perspective on a different culture and helped me learn about myself and what I’m capable of. Teaching and facing new situations every day has made me a lot more confident.”
Charlotte Gray, Shanghai Placement 2015-16
“I enjoyed the process of planning great classes and the chance to practice teaching several times a day. I enjoyed the opportunity to be creative; the school gave me a curriculum of words and sentences to teach, but I could teach them any way I wanted. It was a great opportunity to put a lot of ideas into practice and see what works.”
Ted Rayner, Wuhan Placement 2014-15
“The cost of living is so much cheaper here and living in China has provided the ideal platform to work and be able to afford to travel on weekends and in the holidays, something I would never do if I were still at home. I’ve been to the Yellow Mountains, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Ningbo, Xi’an, Chengdu, Guilin, Seoul, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh!”
Katy Pegg, Shanghai Placement 2016-17
