Hi, I’m Amy and I am Teach English in China’s Programme Coordinator. I help future teachers prepare for their teaching placements in China by assisting with the work visa application process.
I joined the Teach English in China long-term teaching programme in September 2017. I had already lived abroad in Europe during my degree, and so decided I wanted a new challenge after university. Teach English in China was the perfect opportunity for me to gain work experience and valuable professional skills whilst exploring a different part of the world.
My placement was in Beijing. I worked at a secondary school, teaching students aged 12 and 13. I developed really strong relationships with my colleagues and my students, meaning I enjoyed work every day. At the weekends and during holidays, I travelled extensively and ticked off many bucket list items, such as camping on the Great Wall and seeing the Terracotta Warriors.
In China, I learned Mandarin from scratch and by the end, I was fairly competent. I kept a blog while traveling and loved helping other teachers to plan their adventures. I have attended Teach English in China career events to share my experience and knowledge with potential foreign teachers.
Going to China has was an incredible experience for me. I’m still in touch with many of the teachers I met and I’ve been using my unique insight whilst studying an MSc in International Development. If you’d like to know more about my experience or have any general queries, please get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you!
